SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! (on monday, monday, monday.)

I had to keep it under wraps until now, but here's a project from the past summer I worked on - a redesign for one of the Monster Jam trucks sponsored by Hot Wheels, Bad News Travels Fast. I look forward to seeing it in action this February when the Thunder Nationals come to Dayton....

KABOOM!

Oh and not really art related, but I guess I could just say it's research for my War paintings for the Four Horsemen, but I finally broke down and got an XBOX 360. I was holding onto the Playstation 2 as long as I could, but knew it was time to step it up. I agonized for weeks as to whether I should get a Playstation 3 or an XBOX. I'm real loyal to my game systems having started out with a Sega Master System, when I was like 12 and then moving onto a Sega Genesis and then in 96 pledging my life to a Playstation when it was still like $299. Anyway, I love the 360, the graphics are incredible, and I've been having a bunch of fun playing Call of Duty 4 online...I used to play SOCOM a lot on the PS2 and compared to COD4, it's like Metal Gear on the NES.....so if you wanna trade some bullets, my gamertag is vincentvangoad

Even when I'm not playing I can hear the sound of grenades rolling on the ground. Weird.

The Four Horsemen are coming!

The Four Horsemen will be a group art show February 23rd at C2 Gallery in Dayton, Ohio featuring artwork by Germ? (Pestilence), Jeffie (Famine), Mike Guidone (Death) of Monkey Bones Tattoo, and myself (War). For more information check out the Four Horsemen myspace profile.

Bleh.....

So I cursed myself the other day by relishing the fact that I hadn't been sick in awhile and sure enough the next day started feeling that scratchiness in my throat that signals an impending cold. And then to make it worse on saturday, I agitated an old back injury from my furniture warehouse days. Needless to say the past couple days have sucked a big one and the fact that I've gone off caffeine (again) has magnified it like ten times, but I look forward to that feeling when you get over the cold and caffeine withdrawel hump.....let's see, a couple things. If you're in the UK area or can wait a week or so for it to be on US stands, I participated in an article in the new issue of Photoshop Creative showcasing different types of poster artists.

Also here's my contribution to the 2008 Gigposters.com pin-up calendar..it went through a ton of really crazy incarnations, but in the end I decided to do something a little classical. I'll have more details as soon as they are available. All sales are going to benefit Ggiposters.com, a website that I owe a lot of thanks and gratitude to , not only for hooking me up with some really great jobs, but for introducing me to a lot of cool people.

Also the Star Wars tribute show was great..incredible turnout and some really cool costumes...I thought I was going to fall down when I saw a girl dressed as Nein Numb...props to C2 Gallery, Jeffie, Germ?, and Mike Guidone of Monkey Bones for getting it all together.....the four of us have some really cool projects in the works so be sure and stay tuned....

new painting

Just wrapping up.....this particuar painting is the second version of a commission I took on quite awhile ago.....I still consider myself as learning to paint and trying to develop a process. When I was in college, I took painting twice and both times were miserable experiences, because I went in there with no knowledge whatsoever about painting, and I also happened to get stuck with two of the craziest painting teachers that CCAD had to offer - like I'm talking acid flashback crazy. So my sophmore year I closed up my oil paints and they haven't moved from the same spot in my mom's garage. So a few years ago, I started feeling this urge to begin painting again as a balance to the commercial work I was doing and found it to be very relaxing and very evocative of what it felt like as a kid, to just kind of play and experiment, without art directors telling you to change that or urgently e-mailng that a deadline had been moved up. Anyways I think I'm finally onto a process for painting that feels natural and comfortable, hope to be implimenting it in some upcoming pieces, and look forward to seeing those small incremental improvements that come along with practice.....

Busy, busy, busy

You ever feel sometimes like you've worked your brain so hard that it feels like it's dripping out of your eye socket? Well, that's kind of how I feel right now. Lot of stuff been going on - two new Hot Wheels under my belt, bringing my total to 14 so far and the ones just wrapped up are easily my favorites so far...as soon as they are released I'll post images of them......also wrapped up a gigposters for Black Crowes and Jucifer, and an entry for a Deviantart contest (fingers crossed).....
Next on the docket - an Aerosmith gigposter with a noseart pinup theme, working on some commission pieces I have piled up, and more research and sketching for the Gods project I mentioned earlier...I'll spill a few more details on that as I make more progress....

Back from Chicago

Well, I got back into town yesterday after spending the weekend in Chicago for Flatstock 13 at the Pitchfork Festival. Had a great time hanging out with everybody and look forward to doing it again next year. For people that don't know, Pitchfork is a yearly music festival with this years lineup including Slint, Gza, Sonic Youth, Cat Power, Mastodon, De La Soul, and wait for it....wait for it....Yoko Ono. Flatstock is a gathering of rock poster artists from all over the country and happens multiple times a year. The poster scene is very tight and I always walk away super inspired and anxious to get back to work, which is good because things kind of piled up a little while I was getting my stuff ready for this past weekend. Here's some pictures from the Flatstock portion of the fest taken by Daniel Danger....check em out....

Flatstock Chicago, Royal Flush, new site, and more

I've been shitty lately as far as updating this thing, but some things of note lately -

- I'll be attending Flatstock13/Pitchfork Festival this year and sharing a booth with my fellow Daytonites, F'nHarsh Design. Last year was a blast despite the upper 90 degree heat, and the lineup for this years Pitchfork Festival is gonna rule. My friend Julie has already informed me that she has two bottles of Jameson's on the ready and considering I have no tolerance whatsoever, I'm sure some hilarity will ensue.

- The new issue of Royal Flush has finally arrived! I just received my complimentary artist copies today and it is quite a sight to behold. Be sure and pick up your copy through the Gigposters classifieds or through the official site.

" Royal Flush is a NYC-based underground Music & Arts Magazine. Founded in 2001, Royal Flush regularly features the finest artists in underground comics, the talents of many top writers, photographers, illustrators and interviews with bands both legendary and obscure. You can't lose with a Royal Flush! For fans of Mad Magazine, Spin, Juxtapoz and Creem.
Royal Flush Magazine is available all over this great country and even in some remote parts outside U.S. borders. Look for us in Borders Books, Barnes & Noble's, Tower Records, Virgin Megastores, Newbury Comics, and many other independent record and comic shops.
We've featured hundreds of pages of underground comics, music, film & DVD, and games reviews, politics, fashion, art and youth/street graphitti culture."

Also, over the next couple weeks I'm going to work on a redesign for my site...it's served it's purpose over the past year, but I think I need to make it more focused and streamlined...sometimes, more isn't necessarily better I guess is what I'm saying. So be on the look out.

And finally here's a logo I just finished up for my friend Jason Vorhese. It's a little bit looser style them I'm used to, but after a couple tight pieces that really tested my patience, it was nice to have a little fun....next on the old docket - a new car for Mattel, gigposters for Jucifer, The Black Crowes, and Aerosmith, and some movie monster paintings for a show in July....stay tuned

Sketchbook Massacre 2007

Every once in awhile I take a matte knife to my sketchbooks and sell off some of my pieces...sketches probably isn't the operative word, because a lot of times I might spend an entire day on one of my "sketches".....anyway, I just put several pieces up in the gigposters.com classifieds...please e-mail or send a private message to me through GP to make sure a particular piece is still available..

A couple new pieces

I was happy to find that Dick Blick carries Dr. Martens concentrated watercolors - was worried they were getting phased out or something...now if I could just hunt down a new palette for them...mine's like ten years old and is looking pretty wrecked. Anyway, here's a couple new pieces. The skull one is for an artful dodger themed art show in Columbus. It's kind of hard to tell from the picture, but there is a separate matte with an acetate window on it. The second one is just a screwing around piece...nothing earth shattering, just getting comfortable with my inks after three lengthy jobs using mostly the computer.

Also it must be mentioned that the white neon has officially died. Apparently the water pump exploded on it and when it did , wreaked havoc on my engine and timing chain. I hate cars. Will someone just invent a teleporter already? Anyway, she was a good car for the 7 years I had her and I'm sure will end up as a 1' foot cube like my last car did.

Brain = fried

For the past four-five days I've spent 95% of my time in the vicinity of my drawing desk / computer area working on stuff for the Warped Tour / Alternative Press brochure....finally done and waiting to hear back from the art director if any changes are required. I'll post pics of it as soon as I'm able....in the meantime, here was a poster I worked on earlier this month for the kind folks at Echo Ditto . They just celebrated their 3rd anniversary and commissioned me to do a poster to mark the occasion....here's the final piece as well as pics from their party where five framed copies were given to the main players. It was a fun project to work on.....

Leapin'!

Just got one of these the other day...this was one of the cars I did last year for the Road Beasts series for Hot Wheels...honestly, I didn't really like the final design when I turned it in, but seeing it in person and in 3-D I would have to say it is probably my favorite of the designs I've done for them. Nice and simple.

Not much to update, mainly because most of the stuff I'm currently working on right now I can't show yet...I'm just wrapping up designs for temporary tattoos, signed contracts with a digital licensing company, and I can't say anything about yet because my name hasn't been announced as a participant, but whereas I thought doing the work I've done on Hot Wheels fulfilled a childhood wish, this new thing kind of one ups that in the dream job department - you'll see......stay tuned........

Tattoo Flash article

Be sure and pick up the newest issue of Tattoo Flash, which goes on sale March 20th (cover date May 2007). I owe a lot that has happened to me over the years to Frenchie Nielsen and Roberta Conroy of Paisano Publications (Tattoo Magazine, Tattoo flash, Tattoo Savage) and they devoted the entire 16 pages of the supplemental magazine to showcasing my rock posters and illustrations. So go and check it out.....

They're always after me Clover Cars......

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, one of the newest cars I worked on for Hot Wheels is now available as part of the Wal-Mart exclusive Clover Cars series. Good luck finding one....get it? It's got a leprechaun on it, and I said LUCK....c'mon, that's comedy gold....get it? It's got a leprechaun on it and I said GOLD......oh never mind.

Buffy 10th anniversary poster

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer 10th anniversary poster I worked on late last month is now available on the Mondo Tees website in two versions - on brown paper and a white paper variant. Both are extremely limited so jump on 'em while you can.
