Ha, sorry I've been AWOL and havent been updating my blog as much as I should , but I've been up to my eyeballs in commercial work (that of course Im not allowed to show yet or ever)....anyway, I've managed to work on a few things here and there....first off, I'm proud to announce that Jeff Richards, Mike Guidone, and I have regained the C2 workspace on front street where we've put on shows in the past. I've been needing a much larger environment to work in and it'll be nice to talk to people other then myself for a change....right now we are planning out our first show scheduled to happen around Halloween so stay tuned for updates...

Well, growing up I was somewhat of a gamebook nerd (which has morphed into videogame nerd as I've gotten older) and one of my favorite series of all time was Be an Interplanetary Spy. The first one I got was book 4 - Space Olympics (which a friend tracked down for me) and it's been kind of cool to look online and find the different covers that I used to just stare at for hours and have some memories come rushing back.

Man, I was just looking and the last post I made was from over a month ago and it wasn't even about my own work. I'm such a slacker. Anyway, I've been in commercial job land doing stuff I can't really post, but still working on projects here and there....just finished up another Giant Peach ad that will be running in the June issue of Juxtapoz. I've been on this greek and mythological god kick for the last couple years and we figured out a way to make it bleed into my GP work....with this piece, over the past two and a half years I've done 11 ads for The Giant Peach and have really enjoyed working with them. I found a PERFECT Canson sketchbook the other day (the people at Michael's have to think I'm insane watching me check to make sure there arent any bent pages) and hope to fill it up, although I do have to admit I've kind of been eyeing the iPad and the gears in my head have been grinding, thinking of ways I could use one to assist in my work (for one as a digital sketchbook using the SketchbookPro app)......so I'm debating whether to just give in or wait until the 2nd generation iPad comes out......

"So, as many of you know my daughter was hit by a truck a few weeks ago. She was hurt pretty bad but is recovering well. Much quicker than expected actually. All of the well wishes and positive vibes were much appreciated. There is still a long road to her full recovery though and the financial fallout from the last few weeks is starting to become more clear.
During this time I had to turn down a couple of petty well paying jobs. I also haven’t been able to work everyday. As you can imagine being a self employed artist is a pretty tough path. In fact many of you know this from first hand experience. If I don’t work everyday it’s not good. The bills are starting to come in from the hospital, insurance, prescriptions etc,etc. So, things are pretty tight right now.

The positive side of that is that I am forced to get off my ass and start hustling again. So over the years I've found myself becoming more and more reliant on computers while at the same time having less and less fun with the actual process of doing art. When I first started out doing art as my career, I used Photoshop minimally and for the most part did everything by hand. Then as I got more and more work and especially as I got into working on rock posters I found myself doing less and less by hand because I was trying to be more efficient and think ahead...the last couple years I had really started to notice my enjoyment slowly dwindling. The work was technically getting better but it just lost that spark that would keep me working till 3 in the morning whether I needed to or not and would send me rushing to my art desk first thing in the morning. For awhile there I was really fearing that I was losing my art mojo, but couldnt seem to connect it with the fact that I was doing most of my work staring at a computer screen. I hadn't stopped doing hand done stuff completely - a few paintings here and there and some pencil stuff but as far as my commercial illustration work it was line art by hand and then everything else in computerville with maybe a transparent watercolor splatter layer to make it look hand done. So while working on pieces for a Halloween show I decided to dust off my Dr. Martin inks and try them just for the hell of it. One of the benefits/pitfalls of working on the computer is the ability to go back in history and change things that didnt work out so good. I started to become reliant on that and the idea of doing stuff by hand where I wouldn't be allowed that luxury really started to scare me. It's kind of embarassing to admit but it's true. So I started using my inks and it was like that old spark was back. I've been churning work out and with each piece I wonder why I stopped and also look back at old pieces I did on the computer and they just look so lifeless and flat in comparison. I'm not completely swearing computers off because I never know when I'll have to do another silkscreened piece or work for Hot Wheels/Mattel but whenever possible I'm going to do it by hand. It's good to be back.

Been working furiously on a couple different projects including one that's been in my noggin' for a couple years now that I would work on, walk away, come back to, rinse, repeat. I'm itching to show pictures of the progress but I'm making an effort to be more patient with my work and more selective as to how I go about unveiling it and at what stage. Also working on pieces for the Beggars' Night show at C2 on the 31st. Be sure and save your pennies because Jeffie, Mike Guidone, and myself are each working on painted skatedecks to raffle off the night of the show. From what I've seen from everybody it's shaping up to be a really great show.

For the next installment here's a couple more pieces and a little bit of insight into their backstory

Alice in Chains - Electric Factory 2006

I was a little apprehensive about doing a poster for Alice in Chains mainly because of the death of their lead singer, Layne Staley of a heroin overdose and the feeling that the band wasnt "complete" anymore. But then I kind of gave myself a little peptalk and tried to imagine my 1992 self and how it would feel to know that I was going to do a poster for one of my favorite bands someday. In an early version I imagined an angel desperately trying to make it's way to the sun (I guess to regain power or something) and saw that as a reference to Icarus and flying to close to the sun i.e. Layne Staley and how his star had burned out....but after being art directed to make it "darker" I remembered an old piece I had done during college which coincidentally had a drug theme to it of an angel slowly sinking in water...

So then I basically changed what at that time was a sun into light above water, added a bunch of ripples, and completely changed my color palette. One cool thing was that after all was said and done I remembered the lyrics to their song Down in a Hole and was struck by the eeriness of their connection to my imagery. Subliminal? Coincidence? Layne Staley posessing my brain? You decide.

This piece is pretty self explanatory - Ozzy Osbourne as some sort of creepy religious angel.....the funny part is, those are my hands. HA

Giant Peach - Peach Asteroid ad 2008

There's a couple little stories going on in this particular piece. First off, when I first moved back to Dayton in 2006 I figured out a little walking route so I could clear my head when needed and brainstorm for ideas. Part of it comes to a little dead end and at the time the image of that began to really define how I was feeling at the time. I also had really been thinking of wanting to get a dog and had always pictured myself getting a white lab....eventually that stupid Marley and Me movie came out and seeing that type of dog all over the place caused me to throw that idea out the window...but I digress. As for concept, one day while on my route I got these visions in my head of a huge tentacled peach creature emerging from a bank of clouds and either attacking a large suburb or one of the huge water towers I passed while walking. Then I did a little bit of research into peaches and came across some old japanese folklore about Momotaro aka Peach Boy.

"According to the present form of the tale (dating to the Edo Period), Momotarō came to Earth inside a giant peach, which was found floating down a river by an old, childless woman who was washing clothes there. The woman and her husband discovered the child when they tried to open the peach to eat it. The child explained that he had been sent by Heaven to be their son. The couple named him Momotarō, from momo (peach) and tarō (eldest son in the family)."

So basically the concept is that you are seeing Peach Boy's arrival on earth, kind of like Superman's spaceship crash landing. Also it should be noted that in the middle of working on this piece I had watched Iron Giant and it's pretty obvious how it influenced the art style and color palette.

Inspired by some recent podcasts and my love for the commentary tracks on DVDs, here's some back stories behind some of my pieces.

Chris Isaak - Borgata Music Box 2006

The concept for this piece came to me after days of false starts and lots of frustration. My favorite Chris Isaak album is Forever Blue and when I thought of the color blue, the first thing that popped into my head was this painting by Picasso called "The Old Guitarist" that ushered in his "Blue Period"

The Giant Peach Peach Monkey Ad - 2008

This ad was inspired by a picture that was posted on Gigposters.com demonstrating a martial arts move where you grab your opponents testicles and literally rip them off, causing them to bleed to death. The name of the move? MONKEY STEALS THE PEACH as pictured below. YOUCH.

and last but not least

Killers - Borgata Event Center 2006

When I saw promo materials for Sam's Town I noticed a distinctive Atlantic City Boardwalk feel to it and the first thing that popped into my head was the movie Big where Tom Hank's character makes a wish on a Zoltar fortune telling machine and becomes an adult but later becomes a kid again

The kind of weird thing was that when the album came out my favorite song was Read my Mind......cue creepy music.....

Been eyeing the huge stack of unfinished paintings laying next to my easel......for some reason with painting, I have this fear of finishing or more specifically, can't visualize how a painting could possibly be finished - seems like there is always something that can be worked on/improved. I remember in an interview with George Lucas, him saying something about paintings never being finished, just ABANDONED - pretty much sums up my train of thought. But I think it's time for me to finally come back from going to get cigarettes and reclaim my kids.

A couple great podcasts for freelance illustrators

One of the many aspects that I don't think I hear enough about freelance illustrators is the effort that it takes and the social deprivation that goes hand in hand with pursuing the profession. Anyway, while searching for podcasts on iTunes I came across a couple great podcasts focused on being an illustrator - Big Illustration Party Time and Escape from Illustration Island. Both are very informative and both - specifically Escape from Illustration Island - focus on the psychological aspect of being a freelance illustrator.

Lately I've kind of hit a block and listening to both these podcasts have really helped me get my focus back and remind me why I pursued this line of work in the first place...so go check 'em out whether you're an illustrator or want to understand what goes on in the mind of one.

So I just realized yesterday that as of a couple days after Christmas, I have been a freelance illustrator for 8 years now. A lot of stuff has happened both good and bad along the way, but I wonder how my life would be if I wouldnt have gotten fired from that crappy art manufacturing job right after Christmas 2000. I've been taking a break from art the past month so I could work on a new portfolio, website, and other promotional stuff and for the first time in awhile, I've been able to look at all that work (over 100 pieces not including all the hours of sketching to get to those finals) with a fresh eye and a little bit of pride. I want to take this time to thank all the people who have taken a chance on me and trusted me to do work for them, especially the ones in the beginning and I look forward to 8 more years.

One of my projects this summer is to customize this little fellow - a blank BUD from Jamungo for an upcoming show at Hero Design this fall...still trying to figure out what I'm going to do....I'll probably take pictures during the process so be sure and check in from time to time......this month I'm going to take a little time off to get to some personal projects I've been wanting to do for awhile including a shirt design, art print, new promotional pieces, and last but not least a redesign of my website....it's served me well for two years, but I think it's time to streamline it and update it...

Three things going on this saturday, first off The Bad News Travels Fast truck is coming to Dayton, Ohio with the rest of the Monster Jam trucks. Second, saturday is Kmart Hot Wheels Collectors Day 2008 and there will be several new to market releases of cars including a silver variant version of the Impala I worked on last year.
And last, but definately not least, The Four Horsemen show will be going on at C2 gallery located in the Front Street Warehouse, Downtown Dayton featuring work by Jeffie, Germ?, Mike Guidone, and myself. Each of us will be showing off pieces inspired by the four horsemen of the apocalypse as well as previous work.

Oh and not really art related, but I guess I could just say it's research for my War paintings for the Four Horsemen, but I finally broke down and got an XBOX 360. I was holding onto the Playstation 2 as long as I could, but knew it was time to step it up. I agonized for weeks as to whether I should get a Playstation 3 or an XBOX. I'm real loyal to my game systems having started out with a Sega Master System, when I was like 12 and then moving onto a Sega Genesis and then in 96 pledging my life to a Playstation when it was still like $299. Anyway, I love the 360, the graphics are incredible, and I've been having a bunch of fun playing Call of Duty 4 online...I used to play SOCOM a lot on the PS2 and compared to COD4, it's like Metal Gear on the NES.....so if you wanna trade some bullets, my gamertag is vincentvangoad

Even when I'm not playing I can hear the sound of grenades rolling on the ground. Weird.

So I cursed myself the other day by relishing the fact that I hadn't been sick in awhile and sure enough the next day started feeling that scratchiness in my throat that signals an impending cold. And then to make it worse on saturday, I agitated an old back injury from my furniture warehouse days. Needless to say the past couple days have sucked a big one and the fact that I've gone off caffeine (again) has magnified it like ten times, but I look forward to that feeling when you get over the cold and caffeine withdrawel hump.....let's see, a couple things. If you're in the UK area or can wait a week or so for it to be on US stands, I participated in an article in the new issue of Photoshop Creative showcasing different types of poster artists.

Also here's my contribution to the 2008 Gigposters.com pin-up calendar..it went through a ton of really crazy incarnations, but in the end I decided to do something a little classical. I'll have more details as soon as they are available. All sales are going to benefit Ggiposters.com, a website that I owe a lot of thanks and gratitude to , not only for hooking me up with some really great jobs, but for introducing me to a lot of cool people.

Also the Star Wars tribute show was great..incredible turnout and some really cool costumes...I thought I was going to fall down when I saw a girl dressed as Nein Numb...props to C2 Gallery, Jeffie, Germ?, and Mike Guidone of Monkey Bones for getting it all together.....the four of us have some really cool projects in the works so be sure and stay tuned....

Just wrapping up.....this particuar painting is the second version of a commission I took on quite awhile ago.....I still consider myself as learning to paint and trying to develop a process. When I was in college, I took painting twice and both times were miserable experiences, because I went in there with no knowledge whatsoever about painting, and I also happened to get stuck with two of the craziest painting teachers that CCAD had to offer - like I'm talking acid flashback crazy. So my sophmore year I closed up my oil paints and they haven't moved from the same spot in my mom's garage. So a few years ago, I started feeling this urge to begin painting again as a balance to the commercial work I was doing and found it to be very relaxing and very evocative of what it felt like as a kid, to just kind of play and experiment, without art directors telling you to change that or urgently e-mailng that a deadline had been moved up. Anyways I think I'm finally onto a process for painting that feels natural and comfortable,hope to be implimenting it in some upcoming pieces, and look forward to seeing those small incremental improvements that come along with practice.....

Right now I'm working on some stuff that unfortunately I can't show but here's a couple recent things I worked on...

First, this Kat Von D laser etched deck that I worked on with Kurt Barbee of 5280 lasers....also here's an ad I did for The Giant Peach.

Also, for people who are wating on commission pieces, I'm going to take a little haitus from commercial work so I can catch that stuff up....thanks for being patient....

You ever feel sometimes like you've worked your brain so hard that it feels like it's dripping out of your eye socket? Well, that's kind of how I feel right now. Lot of stuff been going on - two new Hot Wheels under my belt, bringing my total to 14 so far and the ones just wrapped up are easily my favorites so far...as soon as they are released I'll post images of them......also wrapped up a gigposters for Black Crowes and Jucifer, and an entry for a Deviantart contest (fingers crossed).....
Next on the docket - an Aerosmith gigposter with a noseart pinup theme, working on some commission pieces I have piled up, and more research and sketching for the Gods project I mentioned earlier...I'll spill a few more details on that as I make more progress....
